Minority Report Frame Analysis
This frame is a close shot of Agatha’s face. Agatha, one of the extremely vulnerable PreCognitives has just witnessed a future murder before this frame. I believe the viewer is meant to feel uncomfortable and uneasy while looking at this; she is unlike many humans. Her pale skin and light blue eyes contrast each other and make her look almost alien-like. This helps add to the futuristic feel of the film, and fits her job wonderfully. She is both human and not, depending on perception, as she looks part machine. Her open eyes show her emotion, as she must be shocked yet used to what she sees on a daily basis. The light blue water gives off an unusual aura, and it almost looks so clear it could be infused with chemicals.
Because this is a close shot in front of an almost blank background, the most prominent features in this frame are on her face. Her mouth is closed and her eyes are wide open, yet she also looks very tired. These bags under her eyes may very well come from the stress and constant necessity of her job. Her neck and shoulders are partially submerged in the water. Although I am unsure, the water she is in may have ties to the watery footage we saw in the murder scene moments ago.

I like how you contrasted her skin and eyes. I agree that it makes her like alien like, and that is also how she is perceived in the movie, so it was a good observation.
ReplyDeleteHi Lank,
ReplyDeleteVery nice work. I completely agree. This shot is really creepy and kinda gross actually. I like what you said about it seeming like there could be chemicals in the water... nasty! The hues, as you said, give off a sickly, alien vibe, which is important to seeing up the film. At this point in the movie you can't tell what any of this really is, so the style you've mentioned is crucial to helping viewers understand what is going on and what they should expect from the rest of the film: a neo gross violent thriller starring tom cruise and colin farrell. Also I noticed you were unsure if the watery effects were connected to water that the woman is lying in. I think you are right. It makes total sense to connect those two and I definitely agree. And as you said, the actor's tired performance adds to the strangeness of the situation. We almost pity her. She looks like she is suffering, or unhappy with her current employment status. It's a great opening to a movie and I thought you analyzed it very well.
Hello Lank,
ReplyDeleteI loved the analysis and how you extracted so much meaning out of a generally simple shot of Agatha. I agree that her pale tones add to the futuristic feel of the precog department and the movie as a whole. It’s interesting that her expression gives off many emotions which lend to your analysis in a great way. This shot displays a lot about Agatha herself and how much bloodshed/violence she has seen during her time as a precog. The vibe of the shot definitely screams odd and unnatural which you pointed out in your analysis when discussing the bare qualities of the image as you saw them. Although the shot doesn’t have much going from the naked eye, you did well in unpacking the true hidden meaning behind a frame as simple as this one. Great job! Loved the blog.
